Aromatic polyamides represent an important class of polymeric materials from both the academic and the industrial points of view. In this study, well-defined poly(2-cyano-1,4-phenylene terephthalamide) (CYPPTA) was synthesized via low temperature solution polycondensation. Then, N-substitution of amide group of CYPPTA with 1,3-propanesultone was performed in order to increase the solubility of CYPPTA in an organic solvent. N-substituted CYPPTA were prepared by introducing ionic 1,3-propanesulfonate group. N-substituted aromatic polyamide having a high percentage of side groups seems to have more disordered structure and is more soluble in common organic solvents. Modified CYPPTA were characterized by NMR, titration, and FT-IR. Films of these modified CYPPTA have a good potential in membrane applications such as filters or fuel-cell materials. Increasing the ionic content resulted in a more conductive material. |
