In this research, we introduced the application of the smartphone powered on-chip micro-capillary electrophoresis (μCE). For the electrophoretic separation of amplicons on the microchannel, we utilized a boost converter circuit, which increased 5V limited voltage of the smartphone to 250V potential, enabling μCE on a chip. Two steps of μCE consisting of the injection and the separation were performed to separate two amplicons of E.coli and S.Typhimurium. During the injection step, the boosted voltage was applied in the sample (0V) and the waste (250V) reservoirs to fill the amplicons in the injection channel in 50sec. Then, the electrodes were switched to the anode (250V) and the cathode (0V) reservoirs for the amplicon separation within 4min. The overall processes of μCE, the fluorescence detection, and the data display were carried out using the smartphone, providing the future U-healthcare platform of molecular diagnostics. |
