Application of Polypyrrole-Modified Nanocomposite Anode for Microbial Fuel Cell |

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bioelectrochemical system employing electrochemically active bacteria to degrade substrate and generate electricity. The surface properties of electrodes are critical to the performance of MFCs as bacterial attachment and electron transfer is necessary to overcome mass transfer resistance. Various methods for modifying the surface of electrodes have been proposed in order to improve the power generating capabilities of MFCs. Conducting polymers are becoming increasingly popular in the areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology due to their highly π-conjugated polymeric chains and high conductivity. In this study, we investigate the performances of the polypyrrole-modified nanocomposite for MFC. The high biocompatibility of the polypyrrole-modified nanocomposite anode facilitated biofilm growth and promoted extracellular electrode transfer between the bacteria and the electrode. |
