Electrochemical stability issues of organic-inorganic hybrid catalysts |

Fundamental understanding of organic-inorganic hybrid materials (e.g. Me-N-C) for various electrochemical reactions is the nub for the successful replacement of conventional noble metal catalysts. Compared to the large body of fundamental studies on the degradation of noble metal catalysts, however the instability of organic-inorganic hybrid catalysts has hitherto been much less investigated. To meet these issues, we have paid many efforts for ascertainment of the degradation pathways on the Fe-N-C catalyst for fuel cell applications and the Pt-S-C catalyst for hydrogen peroxide productions, through advanced in/ex situ analytical techniques (i.e. online inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) coupled to a modified scanning flow cell (SFC) system). Based on the newly obtained fundamental understandings, we suggest synthetic strategies to reach high activity and stability of the organic-inorganic hybrid catalysts. |
