Molecular Self-Assembly from Small Molecules and Liquid Crystals to Macromolecules |
제목 |
Surface-induced Orientation Control of Helical Nanofilaments |
초록 |
There has been growing interest in self-assembled organic materials for many functional applications. In this study, we suggest banana-shaped liquid crystal (LC) phase as soft nano-building blocks to generate unique superstructure: helical nanofilaments (HNFs). Here, we suggest surface-induced alignment as one of the most effective and simple approach to control this complex nanostructure. Once initial molecular orientations are determined under given surface conditions, further assembling processes are followed even governing the final morphology of HNFs. We successfully prepared various kinds of interfacial conditions by using chemically- physically modified substrates, and these surface effects on the LC orientations are observed by various scattering (GIXD) and visualizing (SEM, POM) techniques. This study gives not only the important insight into LC-based self-assembly system for patterning application, but also the example generating hydrophobic surfaces. |
