Colloidal crystals reflect selected wavelength of light through diffraction. The crystals are usually formed in a film format on a solid substrate, which is neither flexible nor reconfigurable. To overcome the limitation, we suggest a new way to construct photonic surfaces through assembly of amphiphilic photonic tiles at air-water interface. The photonic tiles are composed of nonclose-packed array of air cavities in face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice embedded in crosslinked polymer matrix. Top surface of the tiles is treated by reactive ion etching to be superhydrophobic, whereas bottom surface remains hydrophilic. The amphiphilic photonic tiles are trapped and aligned at air-water interface. As the interface is deformed by the trapping of the tiles under gravity, the tiles attract each other through capillary interaction. The tiles spontaneously form a close-packed array at air-water interface, which provide highly reconfigurable photonic surfaces. |
