In the present study, we found that HABcide 2 derived from marine sources, possessed a potent anti-algal blooming activity against harmful algal organisms in freshwater, and was non-toxic to harmless water algae and freshwater organisms. Interestingly, HABcide 2 flocculated algal cells and those was floated on water within 10 min in low concentration, but its treatment in high concentration induced the disrupting cellular membranes of algal cells, followed by induction of the efflux of intracellular components. We suggested that flocculating, floating and removing algal blooms is a suitable process for controlling HAB in freshwater system because toxic material (microcystin) was not extracted to extracellular environment in low concentration of HABcide 2.
