Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil derived from Saccharina japonica |

Due to their abundant organic content, high photosynthesis efficiency, and fast growth rate, macroalgae have considered as attractive biomass sources for biofuel production. Recently, the studies that macroalgal biomass can also be treated by pyrolysis to generate crude bio-oil have been reported. However, the direct use of crude bio-oil from macroalgae has some limitations such as low heating value, high-viscosity, high water content and instability. In this manner, upgrading of the crude bio-oil is essential to improve its properties for substitutes of gasoline or diesel fuels. In this study, the crude bio-oil derived from Saccharina japonica (brown algae) was prepared by pyrolysis. The characterization of crude bio-oil was investigated using elemental analyzer, traditional vacuum distillation system and GC-MS. The catalytic activities of Pd/C for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) were investigated in trickle-bed reactor. |
