Characterization of clay dispersion in the polymer nanocomposites by rheological and dielectric properties |

In this study, polypropylene/clay composites were investigated by rheological properties and dielectric properties to define heterogeneity of clay dispersion in each polymer matrix. Clay dispersion was controlled by applying electric field. The non-terminal behaviors in the storage modulus at low frequency were gradually increased with increasing applying electric field. When the clay dispersion increased, electrode polarization phenomenon was increased in real component of complex dielectric constant due to the contribution of ionic conduction. And the conductivity relaxation time decreases with increasing clay dispersion in imaginary part of the electric modulus. The degree of symmetry in M” is related to conductivity relaxation time distribution. Distribution of conductivity relaxation time becomes narrow when the clay morphology changes from partially intercalated dispersion to exfoliation. Finally, we related clay dispersed morphologies in TEM images with dielectric modulus. |
