ortho-Carboranes (o-Cbs) with various diaryl substituents have received considerable attention because of their unique electron-accepting properties. Until now, however, research in this field has mostly been limited to diaryl-substituted o-Cbs, and other modifications have rarely been reported. In this study, we prepared ethynyl-substituted carboranes II and III, in which II is an o-Cb with phenyl and phenylethynyl groups, while III is a bis-o-Cb linked via an ethynyl bridging group. Systematic studies on photophysical and electrochemical properties along with DFT calculations show that the direct attachment of the ethynyl group onto the carbon atom of the carborane significantly affects the electrochemical properties of II and III. |
