초록 The power performance of the PEFCs is strongly influenced by interdependent properties such as water and heat management, porosity and internal structure of the GDL. The GDL is one of the critical components of a PEFCs that has the ability to influence the system since its basic functions are the transportation of the reactant gas from flow channels to the catalyst layer effectively, draining out liquid water from the catalyst layer to flow channels, conducting electrons with low resistance and keeping the membrane in a near fully humidified condition. Extreme water repellency (superhydrophobicity) is one of the pivotal parameters governing water mobility and gas permeability through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) as well as the catalyst layer inside a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in the polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). We report several issues regarding the effective water management and stability enhancement in PEFCs including alkaline fuel cells.
