Gelatin-PEG-tyramine hydrogels as local delivery carriers of growth factor for erectile dysfunction treatment |

We previously reported the growth factor embedded gelatin-PEG-tyramine (GPT) hydrogel prepared using horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed reactions for tissue regeneration. In this study, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) delivery using GPT hydrogels was carried out in vitro and in vivo evaluations for erectile dysfunction treatment. We prepared GPT hydrogels that contain bFGF using simple mixing. Growth factor was sustainedly released from the hydrogel matrix over 1month and the released growth factors amounts could be controlled by changing growth factor loading amounts. We performed animal study that was subcutaneous injection of bFGF/hydrogels in a SD rat model of cavernous nerve injury. The obtained results demonstrate that our growth factor carrying GPT hydrogel system have great potential in treatment of erectile dysfunction.
