The objective of this study was to devise a method to enhance the structural rigidity of alkali/alkaline-earth glass sealants for solid oxide fuel cells. Glass-based sealants, both with and without an Al2O3 nanopowder or a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanopowder added as fillers, were studied. The effects of filler type on the viscosities, electrical conductivities, and phase transformations of the sealants were investigated. The electrical conductivity of a YSZ filler-containing glass was similar to that of a pure glass sealant. However, the viscosity and the electrical conductivity of the glass containing the Al2O3 nanofiller was higher than those of the glass containing YSZ nanofiller. This increase in the conductivities and viscosities was attributed to the devitrification and structural densification of sealing glass, and the partial dissolution of the Al2O3 filler in alkali/alkaline-earth borosilicate sealing glass |
