The main components of corncob are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which have high potential as raw materials for biorefinery. In this study, alkali pretreatment was performed for efficient sugar conversion from corncob. As a result of fundamental analysis, the raw corncob contains 35.2% glucan, and its enzymatic digestibility (ED) was 20.6%. To investigate the effect of various concentrations (1–5%, w/w) of NaOH and KOH solutions on corncob pretreatment, biomass was pretreated with each solution under the following conditions: 121 ℃ temperature, 30 min time, and 100 g/L biomass loading. As a result, NaOH reagent was more effective in improving glucan content (GC) and ED than KOH reagent. The pretreatment with 1–5% NaOH solutions resulted in drastically improved GC (51.4–73.7%) and ED (85.4–90.3%). Finally, pretreated corncob with 5% NaOH showed about 2.1-fold and 4.4-fold improvement in GC and ED compared to control group, respectively. |
