Effects of plasma treatment on biodegradation of agricultural polyethylene films |

Recently, studies on the biodegradation of plastics using synthetic polymer-degrading microorganisms have been carried out to overcome environmental problems. PE and PP have been widely used in Korean agriculture, and left in the agricultural environment. Herein, the film surface was plasma treated to improve the biodegradability of PE film. We investigated biodegradation of PE by measuring Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), contact angle, etc. The IR spectra of the PE film show an IR absorption at 1740 cm-1, stretching vibration of the carbonyl group (C=O). As the plasma treatment time increased, IR absorption increased and the contact angle decreased. Therefore, plasma can be used as a pretreatment method to improve the biodegradability of the PE. |
