Here we propose catechol-grafted dextran as an anti-fouling coating material for inorganic implant materials. Catechols are conjugated to dextran and used to coat titanium dioxide via the strong adhesive capability of catechols. The surface-modified titanium dioxide is subsequently tested to examine anti-fouling effects against serum proteins and shows excellent resistance to non-specific protein adsorption and subsequent cell adhesion. It is expected that the catechol-grafted dextran can be used as a promising anti-fouling coating material, which is stable in aqueous milieu for a wide range of implant materials.
