As one of the most spectacular smart materials, electrorheological (ER) fluids, which can be transformed into a solid-like state by an applied electric field, are normally prepared by dispersing various particles such as anhydrous, carbonaceous and semi-conducting polymer particles in non-conducting oil. Among these ER materials, polyaniline (PANI) and phosphate cellulose (PC) particles are potential candidate for ER materials due to their various advantages. In this study, we synthesized PANI by oxidation polymerization and phosphate cellulose by reaction of semi-crystalline cellulose with phosphorous acid in molten urea. The obtained two particles are mixed with different ratios for use as solid-phase of ER fluid and dispersed in silicone oil (50cS). The rheological properties of the ER fluid were investigated via a rotation test using a rheometer which was equipped with a high voltage generator. Enhanced ER property was observed from the mixed particle system. |
