Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) Phase Separation for Procuring Fresh Water by Forward Osmosis Desalination |

In recent years forward osmosis (FO) has been considered as one of the most promising alternatives to procure fresh water. FO is operated by draw solution to draw water from feed solutions through a semipermeable membrane via osmosis. After drawing process draw solutes should be separated to obtain fresh water. In this study we introduce the innovative FO method by using thermo-sensitive draw solutes having the phenomenon called lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase separation. LCST materials can draw water from feed solution at low temperature and release the water at high temperature after phase separation. N-acylated tris(2-aminoethyl)amine derived from the structure of thermo-sensitive polymer was synthesized because polymers cannot induce high osmotic pressure. It shows phase separation at ~30℃. Based on the material, controlled conversion of osmotic flow and resultant desalination are presented. |
