Two-dimensional nanostructures are of great interest due to their potential applications in areas ranging from nanotechnology to biotechnology, but are challenging to synthesize. Rod-coil molecules are attractive for generating highly defined nanostructures that have physical dimensions as small as a few nanometers. When the stiff rod-like molecules have lateral coil, these molecules endow the materials with anisotropic properties due to their strong tendency to be aligned parallel to the direction of rod orientation. This special organization of the rod segments could be envisioned to anisotropic 2-D assembly, like sheet and ribbon. |
