Degradation monitoring of sonicated chitosan in solution by measurement of viscosity |

The object of this study is to explore the degradation monitoring on changes in the viscosity and molecular weight of treated chitosan. Solutions of 0.1wt% chitosan in different concentrations of acetic acid were prepared. Ultrasonic treatment was conducted at 40 kHz and 400W. Measuring viscosity of chitosan solutions at different time intervals monitored the ultrasonic degradation. The results show that the viscosity and molecular weight were decreased faster in 1.0 mole acetic acid than in 0.5/0.1 moles acetic acid. It was indicated that the higher concentration of solvent should have more extended chitosan conformation than lower concentration of solvent. And the high degradation rate of chitosan solution represented as increasing the concentration of solvents at the same time. |
