A synergy between ultrasonication and the polymer matrix in the size reduction of molecular explosive crystals |

In the field of explosives, it is significant to lower the sensitivity to prevent unintended initiation by external mechanical stimuli. Nanocrystals of explosives do not contain impurities, and thus ensure low-sensitivity. Also, crystallization in a polymer matrix is advantageous on reducing the size and sensitivity. We apply the ultrasonication and/or polymer matrix medium with quenching for crystallization. Crystallization without ultrasonication or polymer matrix results in crystals of ~50um, meanwhile, performing both of ultrasonication and polymer matrix produces crystals of ~30nm. Thus, we infer that there is a synergy between ultrasonication and the polymer matrix in reducing crystals size. Since polymer matrix limits the spatial growth of cavitation bubble induced by ultrasonication and this limitation leads to a premature bubble implosion. In other words, the polymer matrix enhances ultrasonication effect on the nucleation. |
