Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) grafted 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate membranes were prepared on the solution-grafting technique. Alkaline-treated PVDF was used as a macromolecule in conjunction with sodium 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate in the graft copolymerization. The structure of modified PVDF was confirmed by FT-IR, Ranman spectrum and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The membrane properties such as water content, ion exchange capacity, electrical resisrance, ion conductivity were measured. Thermal properties of the membranes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The maximum values of ion exchange capacity and ion conductivity were 1.2 meq/g and 0.0097 S/cm, respectively. The minimum values of water content and electrical resistance were 15.5% and 1.31 Ω • cm2, respectively. This can be realized by synthesizing a graft copolymer with a hydrophobic main chain which favors the formation of continuous ionic networks. |
